Removable Denture Support
by c0le on Mar.03, 2011, under Vancouver Periodontal Articles
Dental implants can provide support for removable full or partial dentures. The firmness and comfort of removable partial dentures can be markedly improved by adding dental implants for support. The placement of only two implants can make a full denture considerably firmer and more stable. Lower dentures tend to be looser and and implants in the lower jaw can improve their stability.
How will you know whether you are a good candidate for removable denture support? Our periodontal specialist will make a thorough examination of your mouth. Digital x-rays will be taken to show both the quality and quantity of the bone material in the area to receive the implant.

Oral Hygiene
by c0le on Feb.12, 2011, under Vancouver Periodontal Articles
A dental cleaning every 6 months helps to keep your teeth and gums healthy. A periodontal treatment includes an Adult Prophy (basic cleaning). If it has been over a year since your last cleaning, possible treatment will include either Periodontal Scaling (deeper) or Root Planning and Scaling (requires anesthetic).
Your hygienist can remove most tobacco, coffee, tea and red wine stains, polishing your teeth to a whiter and brighter smile.
Regular cleanings and checkups helps you keep your teeth. Your dental hygienist will help to ensure that you are maintaining good oral health by visual inspection and comparison with your previous visits.
Dental insurance plans usually pay for all or most of the costs of dental cleanings every six months. It’s a good idea to take full advantage of your dental insurance benefits to prevent costly dental procedures down the road.

Multiple Teeth Implants
by c0le on Dec.19, 2010, under Vancouver Periodontal Articles
Dental implants are an ideal solution for people who have lost multiple teeth due to periodontal disease, decay or trauma. Just as with a single tooth dental implant, several teeth can be successfully replace with dental implants.
One of the primary benefits of replacing teeth with an implant-supported fixed bridge is that no healthy teeth are comprimised. Dental implants are placed directly into the bone where the teeth are missing and do not rely on adjacent teeth. They fill gaps, preventing further bone loss.
Dental implants can last a lifetime and they look, feel and perform as if they were truly your original teeth.

Cosmetic Gum Surgery
by c0le on Nov.21, 2010, under Vancouver Periodontal Articles
Gum surgery typically involves replacing gum tissue that is missing or receding. People with receding gums are more prone to the accumulation of plaque and tooth caries. Gum recession exposes the more sensitive root surface, often making it difficult to enjoy hot or cold foods and drinks. Tissue is removed from another area and placed in the area that has receded.
Gum contouring is used when a person has a gummy smile. Gum tissue is removed to provide a more aesthetically pleasing gum contour.
Bone Regeneration
by c0le on Oct.04, 2010, under Vancouver Periodontal Articles
Periodontal regeneration refers to the restoration of supportive tissues of the teeth such as cementum, periodontal ligament and bone to their original levels before damage from periodontal bacteria occurred. When the bone supporting your teeth has been destroyed by periodontal disease, periodontal pockets develop. A regeneration procedure can reverse some of the damage, rebuilding lost bone and tissue.
During this procedure, gum tissue is folded back and disease-causing bacteria is removed. Eliminating existing bacteria helps reduce pocket depth. Isolation and protection of the clean bone area from overlying gum tissue provides the environment for regeneration. Membranes, bone grafts or tissue-simulating proteins are employed to encourage the body’s own ability to regenerate bone and tissue.
Scaling and Root Planing
by c0le on Aug.08, 2010, under Vancouver Periodontal Articles
Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria. Plaque and calculus furnish an irregular surface that facilitates easy attachment of bacteria. Scaling and root planing are done to remove the plaque and calculur. In the early stages of the disease, treatment may be all that is required to gain control of the condition. This procedure is particularly effective for gingivitis. Where advanced gum disease has et in, scaling and root planing may be the first step prior to surgery.

Single Tooth Implants
by c0le on Jul.18, 2010, under Vancouver Periodontal Articles
If you are missing a single tooth, one implant and a crown can replace it. A dental implant replaces both the lost natural tooth and its root. The implant is surgically placed in an opening made in the jawbone. Once the implant has had time to integrate with your bone it acts as the new root for the crown that will replace your missing tooth. The crown is made to look like your natural tooth is attached to the implant and fills the space left by the missing tooth. The replacement tooth looks and feels like your natural tooth.
To ensure the success of this procedure there must be sufficient bone material and strength in the jaw. In cases where it’s determined there is not sufficient support for the implant bone augmentation may be required prior to insertion of the implant.

Root Coverage Surgery
by c0le on May.29, 2010, under Vancouver Periodontal Articles
Gingival recession is a clinical problem that dental professionals face on a daily basis. Patients with gingeval recession have an increased risk of root caries, for which there are limited restorative options. A high lip line can be aesthetically unattractive and root exposure often causes dentinal hypersensitivity. This can significantly affect quality of life by limiting the types of foods patients can eat and sensitivity can interfere with normal hygiene procedures, leading to increased plaque accumulation while increasing the risk of further recession. Over half the adult population has at least one site of gingival recession, so there is a significant burden of illness as a result.
A number of periodontal procedures are successfully used to cover exposed roots: CTG, free gingival grafts, coronally positioned flaps, lateral sliding flaps, and the use of barrier membranes (GTR). The success of the procedure is dependent on a number of factors. These include the experience, the nature of the gingival defect, anatomical considerations and whether or not the patient smokes.

Live Longer with Dental Implants
by c0le on May.27, 2010, under Vancouver Periodontal Articles
Many longevity studies have drawn a correlation between the ability to chew and digest fibrous foods and living longer. Missing teeth, poor fitting dentures and bridge work can make chewing nutritious food, so vital to living longer and better, painful or almost impossible. The mind can associate discomfort with eating and this can lead to loss of a healthy appetite. Depression in the elderly can often be linked to the inability to enjoy certain foods.
Suffering as a result of tooth loss in later years in generally no longer necessary. Treatment with implants can be considered safe and predictable for older as well as for younger patients. Old age does not represent a factor of major prognostic significance in treatment with dental implants.

Cosmetic Gum Contouring
Also known as gum reshaping, gum contouring is a cosmetic dental procedure employed to improve a patient’s smile. The most common treatment is for what is commonly known as a ‘gummy smile’, a condition in which gums cover more of the front teeth than is desired. The teeth appear too short. This often causes the person to avoid smiling and can give rise to self confidence issues. A gummy smile can be caused by genetics, health circumstances and some high blood pressure prescriptions.
Gum contouring is a procedure that has been commonly done with a scalpel. In recent years laser devices are often used to trim away excesive gum overlying the teeth. The laser provides the added benefit of sealing blood vessels during the procedure.
Gum contouring is a painless dental treatment and is able solve the ‘gummy smile’ problem in a single visit.
Clinical Crown Lengthening
Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure that often preceeds other restorative work. Re-contouring of the gum ensures that the new restorations are constructed to the highest standard. Restorations constructed with this advance preparation will usually last many longer than those which aren’t.
